GOODYEAR, Ariz. — If Justin Masterson is just as close to regular-season ready as he states, opponents have the remaining times Spring Training to concern themselves with what the Indians ace can refine before Beginning Day.
The Tribes No. 1 starter was terrific Sunday from Chicago at Cubs Playground, holding the Cubs scoreless above five innings while surrendering simply just two hits. He reach out eight and wouldnt walk any of the 18 batters he faced.
I dont think you ever really know, but I think we have been right there, Masterson said. If wed to play tomorrow, wed be good enough. I think thats kind of the tale, the position Im inside — a lot of guys, were good to go for the season and you want to stay strong throughout the period, so you can still be slicing and also dicing when the playoffs arrive.
Masterson kept Cubs hitters away balance all afternoon — he explained he was effectively wild at times — but was pleased with the activity on his offspeed pitches. Supervisor Terry Francona agreed.
He had good motion on his two-seamer, threw some good breaking balls, and got several innings deep at a real low pitch count, Francona explained. We sent him down there to be able to throw another simulated inning in the bullpen. And also hes just building. While he continues to go out there, the thing is a little more power to the fastball, and also hes got three more starts. Hell be ready to go.
This springtime, Masterson has allowed just six hits in 13 shutout innings spanning a number of outings, striking out Age 14 and walking only two.
Masterson has been around talks with the Indians about a commitment extension but said this negotiations didnt weigh in his mind Sunday, as there are not much news to directory that front.
I think were just going through it and seeing, Masterson said. I know theyre working. The balls kind of of their court as were carrying out it, just crunching many numbers and seeing some things. Which is kind of where were in.
