KANSAS CITY — Jeremy Affeldt spent his initially five Major League seasons in Kansas City, and ex- Royals pitcher Paul Byrds version of rookie initiation — making the novices belt out tracks on the team bus — nevertheless stands out as one of the more vivid memories in the Giants relievers vocation.
All that stuff was pretty extreme for me but it seemed to be fun, and it was entertaining just being [in Kansas City] observing a lot of guys, stated Affeldt, a Royal from 2002-2006. Ive experienced a lot of teams, but a few good friends of mine remain from this original team.
Eight periods — spent on three different clubs — have passed since Affeldt was obviously a Royal, but the Giants three game-series throughout Kansas City marks Affeldts first vacation back to Kauffman Stadium in a unique uniform.
For me, coming back to the area that initially gave me the first shot at the major leagues — I was raised way up through the Minor Leagues using these guys — its pretty amazing, Affeldt said.
The left-hander began the career in Kansas City, cracking time between the bullpen and starting up rotation. He pitched with 184 games for the Royals, starting up 42.
The only current Noble that remains from Affeldts Kansas City payoff time is Raul Ibanez. But plenty of ex – Royals left an indelible mark on him.
Some of our teammates, like Mike Sweeney, Joe Randa in addition to Jason Grimsley, and guys like that that helped raise myself in the game were some pretty fun memories for me,Inches Affeldt said.
In 344 relief appearances, comprising six seasons with S . fransisco, Affeldt holds a 2.66 Period. The only time Affeldt faced this Royals in his career seemed to be 2007, a year after Overland park shipped him to the Rockies.
[Returning for you to Kansas City] was definitely some thing I knew was going to come about sooner or later, but its kind of a great feeling, Affeldt said.
