ST. LOUIS — While there was plenty of jubilation with the result of Matt Hollidays timely headfirst slide into first base on Thursday, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny made available a more candid assessment of that strategy when asked about this a day later.

Its not one thing were teaching, thats for sure,In . Matheny said. I think a lot of football people would say the same task.

Holliday slid into first in the 8th inning of Thursdays 3-2 win against the Brewers. He was originally ruled out on the play, but the contact was overturned after the Cardinals challenged. Street. Louis would go on to tie the overall game in the inning, and the Cards would likely win in the 13th.

It is definitely acknowledged that the quickest approach to reach first base is for any player to run through that. Instincts, however, sometimes obstruct of the facts, which was true with Holliday on Thursday. In such cases, he was fortunate a slide didnt cost your pet a safe call.

I wasnt great deal of thought. I just did it, Holliday mentioned. It worked out, thankfully. I would possess questioned myself if it seemed to be faster to run through the idea, if I would have been out.

While concentrating on that hes not an endorse for the slide, Matheny also stated hesitation in trying to entirely teach it out of players. The reason? He suggested that screwing out with instincts could lead to in-the-moment hesitation, which could increase the chances intended for injury.

In the meantime, on the other hand, he hopes to see his players stay on their toes.

I dont want to necessarily see him or her do that again, or anybody else, because when you do that, there are plenty of things that could go bad,Inches Matheny said. Weve never seen Matt accomplish that before and I doubt well ever see him repeat. That was something that he felt he needed to do.
